Iberê Carvalho is a Brazilian film director. He studied Anthropology and Journalism and completed a specialization in Film Directing in Madrid. As a short-film director, Carvalho has won awards at numerous festivals, including the Brasília Film Festival and the Havana Film Festival. His feature-film debut, The Last Drive-In Theater (O Último Cine Drive-in), won Best Film at the 18th Punta del Este International Film Festival, received an award at the Rio Film Festival, and earned four Kikitos at the 2015 Gramado Film Festival, including the Critics’ Award for Best Film. The film also received the Netflix Prize for Brazilian Cinema. His second narrative feature, The Friendly Man (O Homem Cordial), won two Kikitos and received the Colibri de Ouro for Best Film at the 23rd Rencontres du Cinéma Sud-Américain in Marseille. It was also selected for the official programs of the Cairo International Film Festival and the Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia. At the 2022 Rio Film Festival, Carvalho presented his feature-length documentary Palco de Luta as part of the Première Brasil showcase. In 2025, Carvalho directed episodes of Netflix’s series Radioactive Emergency (Emergência Radioativa), under the overall direction of Fernando Coimbra. In 2026, he will direct his third feature film, The Boy Who Didn’t Exist (O Menino que Não Existia), produced by O2 Filmes. He is also developing several projects, including The Girl from the North (A Garota do Norte), a biopic about Brazilian singer Fafá de Belém, and Live Cargo (Carga Viva), a road movie he is co-writing with Giovanni Venturini.
